What we mean by patriotism.

The attitude of condemnation of football players who kneel during the national anthem - and especially that of our President - is not unlike the attitude that was prevalent in the time of the McCarthy era, in which the determination of patriotism was "if you're not with us, you're against us". Great Americans were vilified during that time; great Americans are being vilified now as well, for their principled protest. May we both stand with those who choose to stand, and kneel with those who chose to kneel, as equal expressions of what we mean by patriotism.
