On Immigration and the Heart of America

The recent progress toward immigration reform brings great hope for the many who seek inclusion, rights, and citizenship in the United States. It a profound development of democracy that political parties can no longer ignore this great need.

But we must include All People in this – including those who seek to change the circumstances of their lives by crossing the border illegally from Mexico to the United States. So many people tragically have died trying to get into this country, in remote and dangerous places, as the border between the United States and Mexico has been more tightly sealed.

I pray for compassion in the hearts of all lawmakers and the U.S. public, that the most compassionate policies be put in place so that All can find pathways to a future of hope, without risking life. I pray that this is accomplished in laws passed and in their implementation. Making clear and accessible avenues for people with great heart but little means to come to this country. Responding to the poverty in Central and South America - for we are One with our Southern neighbors. Putting into place great resources to prevent the loss of life of those who choose cross illegally rather that wait for hope that has not arrived for them.

May our compassion for others to be the central guidepost of these policies.

I hold in my heart the future - when there will be no perceived ‘need’ for borders fences because the world will have evolved so that wherever there is need in the world, there is always the response of the heart, and the flow of love and resources. At that time, the need that compels people to risk their lives for a better life, will no longer be a driving force.

As we recognize our Oneness with all people, now, we help to bring that future time into being.
